Gold moments of My Villain Academia:

Fire vs Ice cousins battle aka that one time Dabi and Geten unknowingly had a fight over who had been most used and traumatized by their father figures.

Toga dropped a reporter from the sky to kill her because the woman was trying to turn her into a martyr for media narrative. Bonus because she did it with her crush's power <3 who says romance is dead.

Gamer boy has endless beef with politicians and racists cults, recruits his friends to do something about it and they end up taking over their resources and houses.

The Meta Liberation Army fucking it up by fixing Twice's biggest trauma in the worst way possible. It's like throwing or hitting the local printer and it starts to work like crazy.

CEO gets defeated by the biggest losers ever and becomes enamoured with their hot mess of a leader. Cringefail conquers, I guess.

THE SIDE EYES OF THE LEAGUE WHEN TOMURA WAS REVEALING PART OF WHY HE IS SO UNHINGED WKDBJDBDNDNDND

Giran was an absolute show, I miss him so so much, bnha give me back Giran.

Tomura defeating a business man powered by stress (not kidding that's literally his quirk) by being so mentally unwell everyone was left with a wtf face.

THE BIG VILLAINS BEING CAPITALISM!!!!!! CEO, head of a media platform, politician, that one techguy, nepobaby... You name it.

On a serious note, Tomura Shigaraki's part are some of the best chapters in bnha and no one can deny it. Tenko's story and how AFO turned him into Tomura...

Moral of the story is death to racism, go and traumatize capitalism back, being insane also pays off and if your boss is a good boss, he'll find a way to pay for that sushi night.

Now that the bnha manga is coming to an end, I'm wondering if the story itself will be revealed to be the actual book/comic Spinner mentioned wanting to write in chapter 427. After all, the main narrator of the story is future!Deku, with Spinner specifically narrating the My Villain Academ arc in chapters 220 - 240.

This all leads me to theorize that Spinner and Deku meet up numerous times after the epilogue to work together on this project and talk. Deku's knowledge of events that he wasn't around for or involved in (for example, Shouto vs. Dabi during the last war, Mr. Compress's discussion with Geten in jail, etc), suggests he may have also interviewed other individuals to capture the full picture of all sides and tell the story completely.

So, basically, bnha might be a comic book created by both Deku and Spinner much like The Outsiders novel was revealed in the end to be Ponyboy's school essay processing his grief about what happened with Johnny and Dallas.

Bnha might be a story pieced together by a hero and a villain coming together to humanize the league of villains instead of actually being about societal change. This book/comic is supposed to spark change - or something. I'm not saying this is great writing or fixes any of the issues in the story... it's just a set-up I'm noticing.

Heya man huge huuuuuuge fan of your acount so i would like to say a few things i feel like mha has so many wasted characters like class b and most of the plf like i know the main cast is going to get most of the focus but its like... so much potential is wasted to me. What is your opionon on this?

Shonen cast bloat’s a bitch. This is true of many series, but ESPECIALLY this one. However, I have an almost opposite opinion from you: in many ways, I wish many of the side characters weren’t there at all because they, especially with how many there are, sometimes draw away from the main and primary supporting cast, which is what this story is about.

Well-used side characters do what they came to do (which means they sometimes explain the moral or theme to their intended audience of younger readers), and I feel like most of the characters do that. And if they don’t, I’m very much a Bakugo (or a ShigAfO) about it when it comes to this series: I don’t care about the potential of extras. If they don’t do their job, my only desire is that they get cut from the story for a stronger final draft.

I have a terrible confession to make in the case of 1-B: outside of Monoma, Kendo, Mushroom gal and Honnenuki, I don’t really care about Class 1-B. I also don’t feel like we really need to. They were there as functional adversaries-of-the-week and did their job very well and got to be fun little western superhero-and-eastern shonen reference characters through their powers and appearances at the same time.

So, no, I don’t feel like they have that much potential to waste.

My feelings about many of the characters outside of 1-B are pretty much the same, but I feel like I should point out a couple notable examples:

Mt. Lady - had an arc. Wasn’t a big one but was nice. I didn’t need any more.

Ms. Joke - did what she needed to do. She might be fun to follow for like a TUM volume, but I really don’t care that much.

Aizawa - his full story got told in Vigilantes and I LOVED IT. Would have been fine sacrificing, like, the entire Class 1-A vs Class 1-B arc and maybe some PLF setup to have the real estate for it instead in the main series tho

Grand - he did what he needed to do. I don’t care about his potential, only his goals and resolve, and we saw that by the end.

Fatgum - I fucking love this guy. I would watch a whole series about him, but I don’t need it. He said what he said.

Shiketsu/Remedial Class kids - did we need everything we got? No. Would I trade it for anything? No. Did I feel there was more to tell? Absolutely not. Would I read more if it was offered? Absolutely would.

Class 1-A - This is my second dirty little secret: the Hero Academia is my LEAST FAVORITE PART OF MY HERO ACADEMIA. (The Endeavor arc is my favorite part because we get to ditch the class and teachers and focus on the main cast sans Toshinori.) I actually would be happy if the class was significantly smaller. We do not need all those kids. However, I found all of them charming and cute at minimum so I was not upset by their inclusion - I just found much of it unnecessary. I don’t see it as potential that has been wasted, though. I see it as a waste of story real estate.

My Villain Academia - Geten, ReDestro, and the PLF did what they came into the story to do. I do not care about any potential they might have outside of that, and they did a great job setting up Dabi/Toya to have one of the best moments in the series.

The previous OfA users - dude. I do not want to sit through the detailed life and times of all eight of them. I am happy to ignore anything that isn’t immediately relevant to the story at hand.

Wash - this is the most crucial character of the cast. He is perfect and perfect in the amount we’re given. Do NOT @ me.

Ask game: Endeavor dies in his fight against the High-End Nomu.

It wasn't the Hood Noumu that killed him. Dabi succeeded in revealing his identity as Touya and finished Endeavor off before Miruko could get through the fire and stop him. Dabi's body can't handle the heat he used to kill Endeavor, though, and it finally gives out on him. The battle ends with no winners.

Without Dabi, Hawks' infiltration of the League hits a bit of a snag as he has to contact someone else now.

The MLA vs League battle goes much worse for both sides, as without Dabi, Geten is free to fuck up the battlefield and the League have no ranged options. Decay can counter Geten, but the ranged area denial means that when the battle ends, there's barely anyone left of the MLA. Re-Destro dies. The PLF never forms.

Hawks is able to alert the Heroes of Garaki's lair as without the PLF the League can't monitor his communications super well. Shigaraki never receives All For One

On the flip side, the reveal of Dabi's identity and death of the new Number One Hero, who was only Number One for one day before dying, has left society shaken. The HPSC is doing its best to crack down, but public faith in Heroes is close to nil.

Wait what. Rei's family was gonna do what!?

Yeah it's.

It's a semi-recent chapter because it's from the current arc but we get this information from Geten, who is somewhere in Rei's family tree though we don't know exactly where, and he's just trauma dumping to Mr. Compress while they're arrested which is the funniest fucking thing and really shows that Shoto got 'trauma dump to a guy I barely know' from Rei's side of the family

But yeah the Himura family wanted to 'keep the bloodline pure' and started arranging marriages between different branches of the family to maintain their status.

He doesn't say /explicitly/ that Rei would've been married off to a cousin, but considering 1.) this is the same chapter where Rei interrupts the Endeavor vs. Dabi battle while Geten is trauma dumping and 2.) the whole plot with Rei is her being in an arranged marriage, it's pretty implied that it would have been her fate

Ofc Enji showed up wanting to find a wife for himself, and he's a respectable man of money and status with a Good Quirk™ so her parents rolled with him instead of whoever else they'd have chosen.

Would the plf mooks being added to the mix really make a difference given how everything has gone. I could see people like ReDestro and Geten having grudge matches with the people that beat them but wouldn't the fodder members just meet the same fate as the twice clones?

(in response to this & this). I think so, yeah.

For one, the MLA soldiers were implied to be a bit more threatening on an individual level than the USJ tier mooks AFO brought to this war; and even if they were actually on-par, there's 115,000+ of them Compared to the ~200 AFO brought (not counting Spinner's forces). That's in increase of 575 times the villain's power from the start of the war (not counting heavy hitters, though RD & Geten hit quite heavily themselves); and in turn, the kind of force we've been told could potentially beat literally all of the heroes in the country, which I definitely cannot say for the Parade or either AFO by themselves.

Like, you compare that to the Sad Man's Parade; but the thing is that while the Parade is a lot of bodies, those bodies are all Twice-but-fragile. You just need one answer and it takes just one hero out of hundreds or thousands to be that answer. Not only is a genuine army not something the heroes can slaughter willy-nilly; but they all have quirks. Each, no matter how small, is an individual threat. And even if its unlikely any of these mook could really match an average pro one-on-one; the PLF actually have the number advantage.

Or another way to put it: AFO's been acting like he could escape to UA at any time. This is laughable because he is surrounded by hundreds of heroes with nothing better to do than fight him in particular, and they're backing up named character Hawks just in case you thought AFO can't lose to no-name extras because of story-reasons. But if those hundreds of Pros suddenly have to deal with a threat that can match all of them, leaving Hawks to face AFO alone? And Uraraka had to face Toga alone? Or Shoto couldn't count on back-up facing Dabi, and meanwhile Dabi could? You can see where the tension we've otherwise been missing from this war may materialize.

None of this means victory would be assured for the villains (a lot of PLF forces are gone for keeps after all); but between the heroes being at half-strength and the element of surprise gone, it'd actually feel like an even fight either side could lose. A feeling that's been missing from this "war" of 5 vs hundreds.

*in the ship a fire nation princess was smiling like a maniac she didn't know how she got here but she knew that like before she'd conquer it all. These...villains with this 'quirks' were the perfect the solders as she burned the ground below watching the worms squirm beneath her....*

*her thoughts were interrupted by something smashing something into the side of her ship as men were thrown across the foyer into the walls or off the ship entirely as a rather giant green teen was stomping over cracking his neck. He was wearing a green bodysuit boots painted red that had metal fillings and spikes on the end and what looked like a mostly black rabbit or hare mask on his face as he stamped forward.*

*deku had used Stain's own Bloodcurdle to paralyze her by drinking her blood of course she still kept letting out fire blasting the ground as she laughed in sadistic glee watching Deku blast back the fire nation soliders to which gave her enough time to recover and hit deku with everything she had as his mask fell off and her soldiers used their fire to burn the city hearing the crys of those innocent souls that suffered from them all Deku yelled a ferocious roar that shot out Ice Fire water Lightning compressed air an explosive beam of light and an arry of darkness which combined blew up the ship and all surrounding air ships that had shown up to continue the invasion. All the ships landed on Dobagha Beacj as they crashed into the sand and water. Azula had genuine fear in her eyes as she soon got hit with the Shockwave of the blast she soon fell into the sand and looked at the sinking ships she groaned.*

Azula:*screeches of pain and yelling at Deku trying and failing to burn him either her fire breath crying and screaming* I-I I AM NOT GOING TO LOSE TO YOU!

*her tears felled more and more as she was having a mental breakdown at being unable to win and realizing this is where her conquest ends at the hands of some Nobody! Some insignificant worm!*

*Deku pulled his sword out picked her up and with one simple punch Broke her neck in two snapped her jaw and end her life all in one as he then froze her body then throw it into the ocean watching it sink as he chucked as hard as he can.*

Deku:*seeing Sunblood's androids and Mai's servants retrieve the people on the ship and help everyone that was affected by this invasion.*...good...thing...youre...here...

Dabi's incredible constant snark and apathy to contrast the League's more action oriented personalities Vs Hawks' incredible ability to piss off anyone he meets in 2 seconds, from AFO to Endeavor + Dabi's fierce tenacity to survive 8 years past his one month left to live, a strong heart, Vs Hawks' lucky natural birth and resilience to survive all the shit up to now, a strong mind. Their constant cat-and-mouse game and hiding their true selves, both geniuses in their own right. DabiHawks is too powerful a relationship. We still don't know whose going to get the last laugh in their Divorce Arc Part 2: or is it part 3? It was an actual line by Dabi too, I sure hope they get Toga and the Twice clones on their side, best middle finger to Dabi ever. Also Dabi's photographic memory to memorize every move he sees on sight and copy it to perfection Vs Hawks' yeah I'm not listing every freaking thing he memorized about PLF in a month, too fucking many- Touya's dying optimism Vs...Keigo, who gained it. The tension of Hawks holding a blade to Dabi's throat and Dabi casually throwing an arm around his shoulder and them always smiling and acting jolly with each other when inside they're probably thinking "ugh I really hate this guy" but just keep smiling :) :) :) Pls, I love them. There's an endless list of parallels to find in them and even similar energy. I keep going back to the basic ones but that's because it's too much effort to dig through the manga to verify things. And about that! We really wrote Hawks always snuggling up to Dabi who was annoyed by his advances, but it's the other way around (like it always is, we're always switching them up) because Ultra Impact recently got a DabiHawks event and there is SO MUCH there I haven't caught up on yet, but at one point Hawks is injured from a fight and Dabi is a naughty cat choosing this time to cozy up to him, "No fatalities, good work Hawks. The No.2 hero really is different from all the others" and Hawks is all "ow...I'm hurt, don't pat me like that" 😒 ("Come on, this is just my way of sayin' good work, you definitely earned some trust this way.") LMAO DABI ARE YOU SURE?! Can't win with this man. It's what he wasn't impressed by during High-End, but if Hawks let them die he'd just put it in his expose video. Hawks is all "well then it was all worth the effort" the effort being that this pigeon used his body to deflect bombs and everyone at PLF is worried about him while Dabi is just 😏 Really reading like a League Found Family + Hawks fic. And there's this one scene where Dabi wants to ditch a PLF meeting because Geten keeps nagging him about skipping them in the first place so he's all "Tch...Ah, Twice. Can you make a clone for me? Then I can skip it." So then Dabi clone is all, "Fine. Sure thing...did you really think I would say that?" Because who can tick off Dabi other than another Dabi? Get teased back you loser. So now original Dabi is instantly triggered because he can dish out sass but can't take it, especially not from himself, he WILL fist-fight himself in a Denny's parking lot if he has to. "Huh? Fine, then I'll make you go. Ice guy, No.2 lend me a hand." Lmaoooo why are you recruiting help? You can handle a single clone, man. Another scene: Geten: I'm not waiting. You shouldn't need a replacement in the first place. Hawks: Haha...sorry to say, but I agree with him there. Dabi: Like I said? You did it this time, Hawks. Hawks: Now now, you can't expect your subordinates to follow your commands if you act out in front of them, commander. Dabi: Tch...I'll remember this, hero. Hawks: Haha. It is my job to maintain public safety. Oh, Hawks. You don't realize the kind of grudges Touya can hold 😔

Also...Hawks insincerely-sincerely calling Dabi "commander" and Dabi nonchalantly calling Shigaraki "boss" hmmm what is the reason. I think the one mystery I can't solve is how Touya's personality turned into Dabi. No matter how much I look, nothing about Dabi matches Touya except for when he's being manic, which they got rid of in the episode! Instead he's walking all calmly down the stairs, while in Hori's sketch he was a hyperactive cat running and leaping "Shigaraki must've woken up!" >:D literally looking like he got the zoomies at 4am, a caption saying "Dabi running down the stairs" easier than running up for you, eh? *leaps over with one hand over the railing* "Just a sec, Machia." *eerily looms over Skeptic and grips him like a ragdoll, like those cursed emoji memes that try to grab you but more forceful and dynamic* "From the day we met, I knew you'd be perfect for this." How long exactly, was Dabi planning this, what was the image of his reveal in mind that made him go, "you're perfect for me!" when he joined the League, what could they offer him? Is that why he was so apathetic, but suddenly when the League gained power and new allies, he's suddenly interested? In October, right after Kamino + Overhaul that he was absent for except revenge arc because he can't resist a good revenge and murder opportunity to spread his name. (It did, Snatch. Confirmed it for him too that he was making the news.) right so October, that was the only time he was mildly interested...in still his own agenda, because he was recruiting Hawks atm and told Shigaraki that he only looks out for himself and has no interest in going out in a blaze of glory alongside him. Dabi, hey Dabi, WHAT CHANGED?!?!?!

LMAO, I didn't notice that we also switch the flirty behaviour in fanon but you're goddamn right. Hawks is the pissed off cat sassing back while Dabi is the flirty/flighty cat having fun messing with this new stray to wander into his domain. It's probably why I find fics to be a bit disappointing because I miss this behaviour in Dabi.

I am disappointed with the changes the anime made with Dabi in the latest season too. Describing Dabi as a cat with zoomies is accurate and it's a shame they cut that T-T I think they lessened on his manic behaviour to make him come across more "cool" and "suave" but it also takes away from Dabi...
